My (Darci's) mom, Maurine, not a horsey person at all. But she loves whatever her kids love. She is, however, very experienced in accounting, taxes, writing, and almost everything else I can think of. She is a former school teacher, tax preparer, etc. (update: My mom has now informed me that she has a photo of her riding a horse. The photo is from 1947. I cannot wait to get it and put it up here!)
okay, here is my mom's photo! She is the one in front.
Here is what my mom (Maurine Hortness, our DoubleHP Secretary/Treasurer) says about this whole thing:
"Do you believe it? I actually have a picture of ME on a HORSE! (It was taken in 1947). I remembered seeing it in Granma's stuff, so I dug out her photo albums and found it. We spent most of my 5th grade year living at Granpa Walter's and going to country school. The neighbors had a girl my age and we were good friends for many years. I spent a lot of summer time at the farm even after we moved back to Huron. These folks had 10 kids. They had several horses, but we could ride this one (name was Prince, I think) and a Shetland named
Pete. Later that summer, their silo blew down, leaving this big ugly pit. I was on Pete, and he got scared and nearly threw me into that awful pit. I think that was the last time I was on any kind of horse by myself until we lived in that place north of Wolsey, and you were in HS. Mickie talked me into riding along with her (but on a separate
horse). I didn't walk for 2 days after that, and I haven't been on a horse since. I love looking at them. They are so beautiful. And I admire them for their endurance, intelligence and loyalty. If only humans could be that way. And I admire people who know how to ride properly and well. I'll get the picture to you. Hope all the critters are okay. Love, Mom"
Director Ila French with her beauties Flash & Galaram.
okay, this is my brag page. But I do think it is important that people know we really are "horse people." We are not some of those "crazy animal rights activists." This is me (Darci) and my niece Jada aboard DoubleHP Spirit. This was his first double ride, so he was a little unsure but was a good boy anyway.
Below is me (Darci) getting a great, no-pressure no-resistance back-up from DoubleHP Prince.

Below is me (Darci) and Moonshine, one of my great loves. He came before DoubleHP and is the reason I am passionate about DoubleHP. His is a great story. We started learning reining maneuvers together when he was about 15 and I was 40 something. We know nothing about his breeding, but it is something sensational whatever it is! In NRHA, they don't have to be registered. May the best horse win. And he did, over and over again! Don't worry. He is still alive. He is about 26 (Vet's estimate). He is still our pasture boss. There is not a thing wrong with him. I just don't make him work this hard anymore. This picture was in Roscoe, Ill (near Chicago). I think it was the same year Moonshine was in the Top Ten for Rookie Reiners at Denver (we were draw 90 something and I have no idea how many there were total. And, it's a good thing we were draw 90 something because we had all of our chaps, hats, etc. stolen out of our horse trailer that trip. We had put our saddles inside, so we still had them.) I was tagging along with Pro Carla Clay in those days. Moonshine was so good he forced us out of "Green as Grass" and Rookie our first 2 years of NRHA competition. He also was very competitive in Limited Non Pro and Novice Horse Non Pro, and he won 2 CPRHA Belt Buckles. I wonder how far he could have gone, had his rider (me) known what she was doing back then. In recent years, Moonshine has given many people, children and adults, their first rides!

Below is me (Darci) on Star, an AQHA mare, who is kind of bred to be a Reiner but is a little too lazy to really be great. What a relaxing trail rider she is though! This picture was in Broken Bow, Nebraska. Anyway, she has won a CPRHA Belt Buckle, some AQHA points, and a wee bit of NRHA money.
Below is me (Darci) on Flicka, an AQHA mare. She does not have a drop of "Reining blood" in her, but she tries harder than any other horse I have ever ridden. She too has won a CPRHA Belt Buckle, some NRHA money, and some AQHA points. She is currently serving as Greg's trailriding partner, since his loyal ol' King has had some health issues. This picture was at Cannon Falls MN the year before the show arena burned down there.
